Did you receive my invitation?
I sent it by starlight and by leaves.
I sent it on the autumn air a day ago.
I asked you to come back, just as you were,
golden, with green eyes. I have sent
this invitation more than once,
by the sound of foghorns, in a stratus cloud.
You may not have received it
where you are, in another world.
But if you are looking out your window
at the past, if you remember the arrogant girl
who let you go, look for my invitation.
I sent it by red-winged blackbird, then
by redbird, then by whippoorwill.
I sent it by honeysuckle, dogwood,
redbud. I sent it to you disguised as a dream.
Then I sat and waited for you by the door,
watching through the window just
to see you walking toward me
one more time.
