   Suburban River: Summer
In the clear morning
the gulls float
on the blue water,
white birds on the blue water,
on the rosy glitter of dawn.

The white gulls
hover
above the glistening river
where the sewers empty
their slow ripples.

The pigeon on the rocks has an anklet about each foot:
the feet slip a little on the granite.
The pigeon shrinks from the
spray
and peers into the
holes
between the rocks.

Upon a warm sunny afternoon in June,
where the water overflows the marble basins of the fountain,
the blue-black pigeons walk along the edges,
wading, and the spray ruffles their feathers.
