Army Ants

a black river
flowed down our walls
smeared the floor under our cots
ate everything scorpions snakes
mice termites

they would have eaten us too
if we had not fled

later we stumbled on them

sleeping in the jungle
in a great humming ball
their bodies linked into corridors
their dead made into bridges
their pale queen at the center
bloated and quivering
