Tayve Neese

My mother left this world
as a whooping crane,

her long neck all muscle, song.
For the first time ever, her dancing and voice

were beautiful, and she was unburdened
of heavy bone, angular jaw.
Her new legs—slender—bent back at the knee

as she crossed the marsh from one bank
to the other, reeds parting, her feathers smooth.
