Gift-Poem

December steel done, flowers open color,
unshadowed brilliance enters the air again,
lets fear dissolve,

and convalescent brightness brush the face
until the subtlest rivers of sleep descend
over all eyelids,

and air lies gracious, lavishing general gold,
warming the lips, touching the salt away,
unlocking wishes,

until the lifelong travelers, find their rest
in prodigal evening, marvel day, moonblaze,
superb ambassadors

whose power discloses sensual ease again
to these who come bringing flowers, standing still
past wandering arrived at open spring.
