The Tools of the Heart and The Three Mountains

Of the first it is barren, with footings of fallen rock,
as though being devoured, being pushed upward.
And the sky is its dividing line, the surrounding plain
its dividing line.

The heart is a pickax in the earth, and is wistful.

Of the second it is verdant, and increases its girth and climb;
breathes in and out according to the time of the day.
And the sky is its dividing line, the green tips
its dividing line.

The heart is a shovel in the earth, and is called desire.

Of the third it is snow-covered and ice-sheared,
which both builds and sloughs its weight.
And the sky is its dividing line, light
its dividing line.

The heart is a wrench in the earth and is called longing.
