Borders of the Mind

The boundary between
dandelion and rabbit
earthworm and soil
fish and water
seagull and wind
Ireland and Ulster
Juárez and El Paso
Gaza and Israel
Ukraine and Russia
every mother dries her eyes
while the birds fly over the borders.

The boundary between
wolf and wolf
lamb and lamb
wolf and lamb
stalker and stalked
victim and violator
everywhere the children cry
while the birds fly over the borders.

Daughters of Abraham
sons of Semites, Celts,
cousins, sons of Slavs
daughters of the Rus
sons of the Americas
daughters of the world.
Today’s maps are drawn
not by rivers, valleys, mountains,
native populations. Today’s borders
are not defined by Nature’s designs
but by power and imperial wars.

Everywhere the ghosts pass by
while the birds fly over the borders.
The people of the northern coast
the children of the eastern slope
A mountain divides two lands
a lake has opposite shores
a river two banks, a valley two sides
everywhere the wise women sigh
while the birds fly over the borders.
