Child Running

Child in diapers running back and forth,
Running for the sake of running,
Child pedaling on tricycle, pedaling
Back and forth, far enough and close to home,
That’s how they do it, all of the children,
Pushing away from familial demands,
Running back to home safety, but each time

Going a little further away,
Going for the sake of going,
Children driven on by energy,
Up and down, far away in flight from home,
That’s what they have to do, all of childhood
Until all of childhood is used up by rules,
Until they enter the cage of adults.
