Autonomy

Every energetic restless
Mother-dependent baby yearns for one thing
Above all others: autonomy
To be a self-governing country,
A sovereign state in its own skin and bone

And to have the capacity
Of a responsible free agent,
Rather than the servant of impulsive
And self-destructive desires.

Crawling across the floor, head up,
Under a halo of the softest hair
Is a daring darling world explorer.
