A Woman Standing in the Surf

Thigh-deep in the sea, she watches waves arriving
As if those storms
Thousands of miles away in starry spirals
Or the long upheavals
Of fire from the ocean bed or the almost breathless
Breathless baffling
Of winds by the moon had all been brought to bear
And to light on this shore
For her alone, each having known all along
Where she was waiting
And how to touch her coldly, billowing gently
Or suddenly surging
As she rises to meet them, crying out of fear
Of her desire, in wonder
Outspreading her arms over water to welcome them
Against her, against her.
