Silver Lining

How lucky I am to suffer
not as infants and invertebrates do
in the moment only,
but suffering that endures
in anticipation, in retrospect,
pain that lives with me
like a bad tooth, the way it makes me
chew on the other side of my mouth,
the way the tongue can’t leave it alone,
every careful bite so risky,
so delicious.
