Earthworms have no ears or eyes,
yet shy from the footfall of birds
and especially sense the presence
of their enemy, the mole. Darwin
serenaded worms with a bassoon,
and they responded
with a satisfying wriggle, 
the way we, too, vibrate
to mysterious promptings,
too obscure to label.
