When All Else Fails

     1
         You make me laugh,

then I make you laugh, and so
it goes, this last day of fall.

     2
         Those two, newly in love,

standing in a bookstore
         near the back:
for them, holding the same book,
         while helping each other
turn its pages,
         is enough.

     3
The setting moon and the night

move silently in opposite directions,
         old friends
no longer needing to bother with words.

      4
         Last fall crickets: impossible

not to write
         one more poem.
