The Early Days of Grief

One less woman in the world,
one more ghost to accommodate
in the vast empty interior
where there is always plenty of room.

A mother is a particular ghost
who refuses to be just another
memory of the dead. She’s like one of
her race horses that won’t run round that way .

It’s early days in this grief,
no doubt there will be many more
visitations of once-lived moments of
mother absorbed in her racing form.
