Rod McKuen

Bengie

I was wrong to invade your little world
of museums and kites and pigeons flying.
                               I have deceived you.
Not by meeting other peoples’ eyes
or knowing arms that were not yours
but by pretending to be young at heart
and invading your stuffed-animal world.

I should have stood aside when your kite
                                          came
                             sailing
                    down
but I had to run and help.
